BMW Group Ushers in Next Digital Key Generation

The BMW Group took a leading role in the seamless integration of smart devices and the customers’ digital ecosystem in the early stages. Providing customers with simple, connected and “keyless” access to their vehicles has been a key area of innovation. Today, it is already possible to lock and unlock the vehicle, start the engine and share the key with others using the BMW Digital Key as part of BMW Connected on the smartphone. But this is only the first step in a global technological transformation being shaped and led by the BMW Group. In 2017, the company joined the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), where it is a leader in establishing cross-industry, standardized technologies and security standards. As a result of this commitment, the latest generation of a standardized ecosystem for vehicle access that will enable new functions across multiple devices and different manufacturers was recently announced. more Global standards for greater interoperability The Digital Key has the potential to enable a range of use cases that are not possible with a classic vehicle key, due to the technological advantages of smart devices. Uniform technology standards are needed to turn the vision of digital vehicle access into reality. Full functionality must be available on various customer devices from different vendors and regardless of the vehicle manufacturer. This is highlighted by Dr. Olaf Müller, head of Development Digital Access Systems at the BMW Group: “Our customers want cross-vendor interoperability. Standardization is the only way to achieve this; proprietary solutions are no longer beneficial.” The BMW Group has therefore been driving the creation of a global standard for digital vehicle access within the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC). Most well-known smartphone producers and automotive manufacturers have already joined the consortium. Standard specifications across industries will also help include all kinds of smart devices, including phones, watches and other wearables. Technological specifications for innovative functions The second generation (release 2.0) of an NFC-based digital key ecosystem has been announced for late 2019. A key feature is the use of a security chip that works separately from the smartphone operating system. This means it also works if the smartphone cannot be started anymore, because the battery is too low. In the near future, Digital Key specification will be enhanced by the ultra-wideband (UWB)-based release 3.0. This will offer maximum anti-theft protection and enable precise localization between the device and the vehicle. As a result, the mobile phone must no longer be held directly up to the door handle to unlock the car, but can conveniently be left in the pocket. The BMW Group recognized early that UWB technology would be beneficial over the long term and suitable for global market penetration. The close cooperation with partners and the fact that UWB is already finding its way into more and more customer devices will pave the way for new and innovative Digital Key features.

Successful Sports Activity Vehicle now also available with plug-in hybrid drive: the new BMW X3 xDrive30e

The unique combination of intelligent all-wheel drive BMW xDrive and cutting-edge BMW eDrive technology makes for sustainable driving pleasure in another BMW model. The new BMW X3 xDrive30e is already the third Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) in the brand's current model range to feature a plug-in hybrid drive and power transmission to all four wheels, offering exciting versatility and a purely electric driving experience as well as outstandingly low fuel consumption and emissions. Together, the 4-cylinder combustion engine and the electric motor of the plug-in hybrid model generate a maximum system output of 215 kW/292 hp. The unique combination of the intelligent 4-wheel drive system BMW xDrive and state-of-the-art BMW eDrive technology reduces average fuel consumption to levels between 2.4 and 2.1 litres per 100 kilometres*. The relevant CO2 emissions amount to 54 to 49 grams per kilometre*. The combined power consumption of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is between 17.2 and 16.4 kWh per 100 kilometres*. Its lithium-ion high-voltage battery equipped with the very latest battery cell technology enables purely electric mobility with a range of 51 to 55 kilometres*. more The new BMW X3 xDrive30e will be produced from December 2019 onwards at the BMW plant in Spartanburg, USA – alongside the conventionally powered model variants of the BMW X3. The worldwide market launch is due to start in spring 2020. In this way, the BMW Group is consistently pursuing not only the electrification of its drive portfolio but also a product strategy geared towards the diverse needs of its customers. The globally popular SAV model in the premium mid-range segment is the first model of the brand to be offered with both a conventional combustion engine and a plug-in hybrid system – with a purely electrically powered model variant due to be added during the course 2020. Sports Activity Vehicle with agile handling, superior off-road performance and outstanding efficiency. The new BMW X3 xDrive30e combines the typical qualities of a Sports Activity Vehicle with particularly efficient drive technology. The plug-in hybrid model is likewise characterised by agile handling and sporty driving characteristics, robust versatility, a versatile interior, premium quality and advanced connectivity. Its BMW xDrive system permanently distributes the drive torque between the front and rear wheels as required – even when driving purely on electric power – so as to ensure sporty driving characteristics on the road and superior off-road performance over unsurfaced terrain. The drive power is generated by a 2.0-litre, 135 kW/184 hp 4-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and an electric motor integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission with an output of 80 kW/109 hp. Together the two drive units mobilise a system output of 215 kW/292 hp. The maximum system torque of the plug-in hybrid drive is 420 Nm. This allows the new BMW X3 xDrive30e to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. Its top speed is 210 km/h. Depending on the operating mode and the situation on the road, the electric motor of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e can be used either for purely electric mobility or to support the combustion engine. In MAX eDrive mode, which can be activated via the eDrive button on the centre console, the new BMW X3 xDrive30e achieves a top speed of 135 km/h with a locally emissions-free and virtually silent drive unit. In the standard Auto eDrive setting, purely electric driving is possible at speeds of up to 110 km/h. The combustion engine only switches on at higher speeds or when there are particularly high load requirements. When both drive units are active, the efficiency of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is optimised, as is its sprint capacity. When accelerating, the spontaneous power development of the electric motor is clearly noticeable, while at constant speeds its electric assist reduces fuel consumption and emissions. The support of the electric motor ensures that the combustion engine can run within an efficiencyoptimised load range as often as possible. The likewise available BATTERY CONTROL setting serves to keep the charge state of the high-voltage battery at a level determined by the driver. In this way, the power supply can be specifically reserved and used for local emissions-free driving on urban stretches of road during a lengthier trip. High-voltage battery based on the very latest battery cell technology for maximum efficiency; large, variable luggage compartment. The lithium-ion battery of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is located in a spacesaving position underneath the rear seat, while the fuel tank is positioned above the rear axle. This means that the transport capacity of the plug-in hybrid model is only slightly restricted. At 450 litres, the luggage compartment volume of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is on a par with those models which have a conventional engine. By folding down the rear seat with 40 : 20: 40 split, the storage space can be extended to up to 1 500 litres. Thanks to cutting-edge battery cell technology and a gross energy content of 12.0 kWh, the high-voltage battery contributes both to the outstanding efficiency and the excellent electrical range of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e. As a result, the plug-in hybrid model can be used for a great deal of day-to-day travel without locally produced emissions – even beyond the city. The high-voltage battery can be charged at conventional household sockets using the standard-equipment charging cable. In this way, the battery can be fully charged in less than six hours. At a BMW i Wallbox, the same charging process can be completed in around three and a half hours. The charging socket is located under a separate flap on the front left side wall of the car. The electrical energy stored in the high-voltage battery is also used to supply the 12-volt vehicle electrical system. Electric licence plate and tax benefit thanks to the considerable electrical range. Thanks to its high electrical range the new BMW X3 xDrive30e fulfils the criteria laid down in the German Electric Mobility Act – depending on fittings – for classification as an e-vehicle, complete with special rights on public roads. It is also subject to reduced company car taxation in Germany. Only half the gross list price is used as a basis when calculating the monetary benefit from private use of the company car. As an alternative to the basic version, the new BMW X3 xDrive 30e also comes in the model variants Advantage, xLine, Luxury and M Sport. Its standard equipment includes acoustic pedestrian protection. When driving electrically at low speeds, an unmistakeable sound designed specifically for electrified BMW models is generated to alert other road users to the approaching car without impairing the acoustic comfort of the vehicle occupants. In addition, the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is equipped with an auxiliary air conditioning system as standard. It can also be controlled remotely from a smartphone using the BMW Connected App: the driver can therefore get into a warm vehicle in winter and a pleasantly cool vehicle in summer. New digital services help make it more attractive and convenient to charge the high-voltage battery when out and about. The digital services support the driver in searching for and selecting public charging stations, enable the charging process to be controlled via remote functions and transmit information relating to charge status, electrical and combined range and individual energy consumption to the driver’s smartphone or other personal devices. In addition, almost the entire range of optional equipment available for the conventionally powered versions of the BMW X3 is also available for the plug-in hybrid model – thereby increasing driving pleasure, comfort and individual style. This range includes an Adaptive Suspension, a Variable Sports Steering and a M Sport Brake System, the BMW Head-Up Display, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Driving Assistant Plus with steering and lane guidance assistant and also Parking Assistant Plus. Another feature included in this range of extras is a tow hitch that can be electrically swivelled out and in. The maximum towing capacity of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is 2,000 kilograms.

2020 BMW M235i xDrive

The New 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe

BMW proudly introduces the all-new compact 2 Series Gran Coupe, offering an extroverted, performance-oriented entry point into BMW ownership. The low, wide and sporty 228i xDrive Gran Coupe and M235i xDrive Gran Coupe models deliver the styling and design, everyday four-door usability and space, agility and handling, connectivity and technology combined with the latest driver assistance such as Blind Spot Detection, Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Detection, Lane Departure warning, and safety systems that BMW customers have come to expect. The new 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will be making it public debut at AutoMobility LA in November 2019 with production starting in November 2019. Market launch is planned for March 2020. more Power and Performance The BMW 228i xDrive model is powered by the 2.0-liter four-cylinder version of BMW’s “B” modular engine family, delivering an output of 228 hp @ 5,000 – 6,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque @ 1,450 – 4,500 rpm. Torque is transferred through the standard 8-speed Sport automatic transmission and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system to the wheels. The 228i xDrive Gran Coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph when the vehicle is equipped with all-season tires and 151 mph when equipped with performance tires. The BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe ups the performance quotient by delivering 301 hp @ 5,000 – 6,250 rpm and 332 lb-ft of torque @ 1,750 – 4,500 rpm from a tuned version of the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder modular engine. A reinforced crankshaft featuring larger diameter main bearings, new pistons and modified connecting rods allow the engine to handle the higher levels of power. A larger turbocharger featuring a built-in exhaust manifold and integral diverter valve increases engine output. Modified fuel injectors are fitted to increase the flow volume. The capabilities of the cooling package is improved with an independent transmission oil cooler that is separated from the engine’s coolant circuit, an electric 850-watt fan, two remote coolant radiators in the wheel arches and an enlarged expansion tank, ensuring that the BMW M235i xDrive is able to display its performance capabilities even under the most demanding conditions. A new dual-branch exhaust system with minimal backpressure assists with expelling the exhaust gasses. The M235i xDrive Gran Coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds (4.6 seconds with the optional overboost function) and reaches a top speed of 155 mph when equipped with performance tires. BMW Performance Control with ARB The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe adopts technology from the BMW i3 in the form of the near-actuator wheel slip limitation (ARB) system. This control system significantly improves traction when cornering or accelerating on wet or icy conditions, and allows wheel slip to be controlled, precisely and quickly. ARB uses a slip controller positioned directly in the engine control unit rather than in the control unit for the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system. Reducing the signal path distance means that information is relayed three times quicker, while wheel spin is brought under control with muck quicker reaction times. Near-actuator wheel slip limitation also works closely with the DSC system to significantly reduce power understeer without the need for corrective DSC inputs. ARB is assisted in its task by a yaw distribution system called BMW Performance Control. Standard on the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, this feature increases agility by intelligently applying the brakes at the wheels on the inside of the turn before the wheel spin occurs. This suppresses any initial understeer and gives the car a neutral steering behavior. Drivers can deactivate the DSC system if they wish to take over full control of the car’s sporty handling abilities. When the DSC system is switched off, the EDLC (Electronic Differential Lock Control) function uses brake applications to simulate the effect of a mechanical limited-slip differential. Braking the unloaded front wheel on the inside of the turn prevents it from spinning and shifts drive power to the wheel on the outside of the bend, resulting in far greater grip when accelerating out of corners. Alternatively, there is the option of the DSC system’s Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) setting, which allows a greater degree of slip at the driven wheels. Intervention to stabilize the car becomes more muted, enabling it to pull away more effectively on slippery or loose surfaces and during sportier driving. This lets the driver control and enjoy the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe without any assistance until defined limits are reached. BMW xDrive all-wheel drive and M235i xDrive Torsen Limited-Slip Differential ARB (Actuator-related wheel slip limiter) technology and BMW Performance Control work hand-in-hand with the standard BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system. The system’s control logic varies the distribution of power between the front and rear wheels automatically and dynamically in response to the accelerator pedal position, engine torque, speed and steering angle. It can split drive 50:50 if necessary and is designed to ensure predictable handling in all driving situations. This applies even if the Driving Experience Control switch is set to Sport mode, DTC is selected or DSC is deactivated. In Comfort or Eco Pro mode, drive is apportioned as required, while keeping fuel consumption as low as possible. Fuel economy is therefore improved without any discernible impact on driving dynamics or traction. The BMW M235i xDrive includes a newly developed standard mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential, which gives the car an even sharper dynamic edge by creating a locking effect between the front wheels. The differential is integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission. The Launch Control function allows the full peak torque of 332 lb-ft to be available in first and second gear. The New 2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe and M8 Gran Coupe Competition

BMW and M GmbH are proud to announce the newest edition to the M8 family, the BMW M8 Gran Coupe and M8 Gran Coupe Competition. The Gran Coupe rides on a chassis and body which is 9.1-inches longer, 1.4-inches wider, 2.3-inches taller and with an increased 7.9-inch wheelbase over the M8 Coupe, adding extra stability, comfort and rear interior space without affecting the car’s track-capable agility. Interior space benefits greatly over that of that of the Coupe with rear shoulder room increasing by 7.7-inches, rear legroom increasing by 7.1-inches and rear headroom increasing by 3.5-inches. The greater interior dimensions mean only a modest 185-pound increase in curb weight. This means that the uncompromised near-supercar levels of performance and luxury can be more easily shared with family and friends. more BMW M8 Gran Coupe First Edition The M8 Gran Coupe First Edition, available with 50 units for the U.S. market, will usher in the arrival of the M8 Gran Coupe and Competition models. Based on the Competition model, the First Edition cars will be finished in Individual Diamant Green Metallic, a color exclusive to this limited edition model. The BMW Kidney grille, side air breather trim, door mirror and window-surround trim, exterior badging and door sill plates are finished in GOLDBRONZE, mirroring the M8 Gran Coupe Concept vehicle. The interior is finished in BMW Individual Ivory White/Tartufo Full Merino leather and features Individual Piano Black trim with a “First Edition 1/400” on the center console door. Exclusive 20-inch Forged M Star-Spoke wheels finished in GOLDBRONZE help set the First Edition cars apart. Production for the limited U.S. M8 Gran Coupe First Edition cars to begin in March 2020. M Power and Performance The high-revving (7,200 rpm redline) 4.4 liter S63 M TwinPower Turbo V8 produces 600 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 553 lb-ft of torque @ 1,800 – 5,600 rpm in the M8 Gran Coupe while the M8 Competition models feature an uprated power unit producing 617 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 553 lb-ft @ 1,800 – 5,860 rpm. The engine features two-turbochargers, cross-bank exhaust manifolds, direct injection and upgraded cooling and oil supply. The turbochargers are positioned within the V of the engine block to help improve thermal efficiency and response. The cross-bank exhaust manifolds improve turbocharger and throttle response by reducing the distance the exhaust gases need to flow to reach the turbochargers. The direct fuel injection operates at a very high 5,076 psi ensuring ultra-fine fuel atomization for improved power and efficiency. Water-to-air intercooling helps reduce the temperature of the incoming air charge for improved power. The advanced cooling system is composed of two separate water circuits, one for the intercoolers and one for the engine and turbochargers. An electric cooling pump ensures that the turbochargers receive sufficient coolant flow even after the engine has been turned off. An additional engine oil cooler and transmission oil cooler ensure the new BMW M8 Gran Coupe is capable of standing up to the higher thermal demands of track driving. The oil supply system has been upgraded with a secondary front chamber in the oil pan which is accessed by a map-controlled oil suction pump to insure effective oil supply during extreme lateral and longitudinal forces. The Competition model features unique tuning which not only produces more horsepower but also increases the torque band at by 260 rpm. The engine mounts on these models are more rigid compared to the BMW M8 Gran Coupe for improved power transmission throughout the driveline and for more immediate turn-in during cornering. The Competition models are also equipped with the M Sport exhaust which enhances the sound emanating from the two twin-100 mm exhaust tips even further beyond the sound of the M8. An M Sound Control button in the center console allows the driver to select the exhaust note which suits their desire. The wide and flat torque curve of the S63 allows the BMW M8 Gran Coupe to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and the M8 Gran Coupe Competition to accomplish the sprint in just 3.0 seconds. The BMW M8 Gran Coupe models have an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph which can be increased to 190 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package. Besides the increased top speed, the M Driver’s Package also includes an invitation to M School driver training at one of the two BMW Performance Center driving schools, either in Greer, SC or Thermal, CA. A dual-branch exhaust system, designed specifically for the X5 M and X6 M offers an enticing sound emanating from the pair of 100 mm tailpipes with electrically controlled flaps. The exhaust note can be softened or increased via the M Sound Control button in the center console. The Competition models’ note is further enhanced with a standard M Sport Exhaust system which provides for a more sporty sound to match the models’ increased capabilities. The cooling system in the new X5 M, X6 M and Competition models is designed to handle the highest demands which may be placed upon the vehicle by the driver or environment. A central front radiator is joined by a secondary cooler in the front, passenger-side wheel opening. Liquid cooling is available for the engine oil, transmission oil and turbochargers. A secondary oil sump is installed for when lateral or longitudinal forces place extra demands on the engine oil supply. The engine mounts are of a stiffer design and help improve both engine response and the transfer of power through the transmission and M xDrive system while also providing sharper turn in from the chassis. M Steptronic Automatic Transmission with Drivelogic The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission offers both automatic and manual shift modes with three selectable levels of programming controlling shift speed and sharpness. M shift paddles allow for quick manual shifting without removing your hands from the wheel. Intelligent connectivity allows the M Steptronic to adapt its shift strategy according to the route and driving situation by working with the standard Navigation System and if equipped, combining this data with information from the Active Cruise Control system’s radar sensor. This makes it possible for the transmission to shift proactively instead of reactively insuring that the X5 M and X6 M are always in the correct gear for the upcoming road conditions. M xDrive all-wheel drive with Active M Differential The M xDrive system has been engineered to handle the full transfer of 553 lb-ft of torque from a low 1,800 rpm and to work with the chassis to provide the X5 M and X6 M with class-leading traction and handling capabilities in dry and slippery road conditions as well as during the increased demands of track driving. An electronically controlled multi-plate clutch quickly, precisely and smoothly transfers the power between the front and rear axles while the Active M Differential further divides the power between the two rear wheels as conditions dictate. The rear-bias of the M xDrive system normally sends power to the rear wheels to produce the kind of handling characteristics for which M cars are known for. Only when additional traction is required is power directed to the front axle. The M xDrive and Active M Differential are linked with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) which is tuned to intervene only in extreme situations. Drivers can also select from several all-wheel drive modes to tailor the experience to their liking. The default 4WD setting offers, excellent handling with maximum traction while the 4WD Sport setting brings an increased proportion of torque transfer to the rear wheels for a substantial increase in vehicle agility during spirited driving. Chassis and Suspension The chassis and suspension components and settings were painstakingly tested and refined in places such as Mirimas in the south of France, Arjeplog in the north of Sweden and the Nurburgring’s Nordschleife in Germany to produce the very best combination of every-day, year-round usability and genuine track capable levels of performance. Agility is the cornerstone of the new X5 M and X6 M vehicles’ wide-ranging capabilities and is imparted by carefully tuned suspension components, extra chassis bracing, stiff engine and suspension mounting points and increased front camber. The front suspension features a double-wishbone setup with forged upper control arms while the rear suspension is a five-link design. Each of the four models, X5 M, X6 M, X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition, features suspension tuning that delivers predictable and linear responses imparting confidence to the driver over varied road conditions.. Further attention to detail can be seen, under the hood, in the form of a special bracing package connecting the front bulkhead with the strut towers, enhancing both visuals and structural rigidity. The Adaptive M suspension Professional with Active Roll Stabilization is standard on all four new M models and has been engineered top provide excellent handling and comfort in varied conditions, from comfort to very sporty driving. Data from body movement, road surface conditions and steering movements is collected from sensors and is used to actively adjust the damper and stabilization bar settings in milliseconds. The driver can select, with a press of the “setup” button, from several chassis settings including COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT PLUS. M Servotronic Steering The M Servotronic speed-sensitive, variable ratio steering is tuned to give just the right amount of feedback and excellent directional accuracy. The ratio adjusts to changes in steering angle, ensuring that turn in response is quick while straight-line directional stability is excellent and low speed maneuvering such as in and out of parking spots is enhanced. There are two selectable settings for steering response and feedback, one comfort-oriented and one sport-oriented. M Compound Brakes, Wheels and Tires The new BMW X5 M and X6 M models feature BMW M’s latest integrated braking system with all featured controlled by a single compact module. An electric actuator builds up both brake pressure and maintains an even brake pedal feel. The M version of the integrated braking system allows for two pedal feel settings; Comfort and Sport to offer the driver the opportunity to select the level of response and feel to match their driving style and conditions. The M compound brakes feature large drilled and vented 395 mm front disks with fixed six-piston calipers and 380 mm rear disks with single-piston floating calipers. Displays and Infotainment with M Views The BMW X5 M and X6 M models are equipped with BMW Live Cockpit Professional running the latest iDrive 7 operating system as standard. This comprehensive suite of integrated connectivity, control and display systems offers the driver and passengers a superb all-round package for interacting with their new X5 M and X6 M vehicle. The latest-generation of the iDrive is composed of a high-resolution digital 12.3” instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel and a 12.3” center display. The system offers many hardware upgrades from iDrive 6, including new haptic controls for the iDrive controller, an advanced tablet-like touch interface, stunning visualizations, and the largest displays in BMW’s vehicle lineup. The M View mode on the X5 M, X6 M and Competition models gives the choice of ROAD and SPORT settings for delivering information via the instrument cluster and Head-Up display. M View features a prominent rev counter in the center of the Head-Up display area with shift lights and locations for two widgets. These widget areas can display G-Meter, Tire Pressure and Temperature or Engine Coolant Temperature and Boost Pressure. The Competition models add a TRACK setting which is designed to be used exclusively on closed circuits. Turning on the TRACK setting reduces the amount of information available on the displays and reduces the intervention of driver assistance systems, such as active braking and steering to a bare minimum or turns them off altogether. The seventh generation of iDrive, which runs the latest BMW Operating System, has a cutting-edge, fully digital design and is geared to the driver’s needs by allowing him or her to customize the system to his or her own preference with customizable widgets of information. This new level of personalization is then stored in the BMW Cloud and can follow the customer to other BMW vehicles. Information from categories such as driving, entertainment, navigation, connectivity, and the vehicle info itself, can be selected in nearly any combination in any of four layouts on the Center Display. Multiple pages can be created and easily accessed with a simple swipe across the screen with your finger. To maximize the capabilities of the large 12.3” digital instrument cluster, the traditional gauges have been finessed into an all-new design pushing the speedometer and tachometer gauges to the outer edges of the display as geometric bands. This new design opens space in the middle for routing and navigation. Information from the center display can also be shown within the tachometer. Additionally, your driving mode will determine your visual display style. Other elements of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional are the Navigation Professional system, two USB-C ports, plus Bluetooth interfaces. The driver can be automatically detected and personal settings activated either using the traditional vehicle key or by downloading the driver’s personal settings the BMW Cloud. Drivers can enjoy the full benefits of the car’s intelligent connectivity capabilities through vehicle apps such as news, weather, office and online search. Other capabilities include Intelligent Emergency Call – which automatically summons swift assistance in an emergency – and regular updates for the navigation system’s maps. The latest generation of the BMW Head-Up display system, standard in the X5 M and X6 M, features a larger projection area, optimized graphics and additional content. The BMW Head-Up Display projects information directly into the driver’s field of vision where it can be viewed without any need for them to divert their eyes from the road. Driver Assistance Systems The 2020 BMW X5 M and X6 M vehicles are available with a wide variety of standard and optional driver assistance systems. The systems really come into their own when driving longer distances by relieving the strain on the driver in monotonous situations, such as traffic jams or slow-moving traffic. They enhance comfort and safety both in urban traffic and on longer trips by providing targeted assistance in complex traffic situations. The driver assistance systems process camera images as well as the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings, to warn of potential hazards and to minimise the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs. The standard Active Driving Assistant on the new BMW X5 M and X6 M includes Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Collision Warning, Frontal Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Collision Mitigation (which now also alerts the driver if cyclists are detected) Cross Traffic Alert Rear, and Speed Limit Information. The optional Driving Assistance Professional Package offers comprehensive assistance for comfortable and safe driving. This package includes Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. It can be used at speeds up to 130 mph and maintains the desired speed while taking not only the traffic situation into account, but also the selected distance to vehicles in front. If required, the system is able to brake the car to a stop then pull away again automatically after being stationary for up to 30 seconds, meaning greater comfort in stop-start traffic. Camera images and data from a front radar system are used for distance control. Another component of the Driving Assistance Professional Package is the Lane Keeping Assistant with Active Side Collision Protection. This system is designed to help the driver guide the vehicle back onto the correct path with an active turn of the steering wheel. Besides emitting visual warning signals and causing the steering wheel to vibrate, active side collision protection also uses active steering intervention to help avoid a collision. Moreover, this package includes Extended Traffic Jam Assistant for limited access highways, which allows for even more relaxed driving at speeds lower than 40 mph during highly congested highway traffic situations. The Driving Assistance Professional Package includes Evasion Aid, which now also reacts to pedestrians and Front Cross Traffic Alert – which reduces the danger of a collision when manoeuvring forwards towards roads that are obstructed from the driver’s view. Back-Up Assistant, part of the standard Parking Assistance Plus Package, offers an unmatched level of assistance when leaving a parking space or maneuvering in a confined area. The Back-Up Assistant takes over steering to maneuver the vehicle mirroring the path most recently used in the forward direction. This system makes reversing for a distance of up to 50 yards an effortless task in your new X5 M or X6 M. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brakes and monitor the surrounding area. The steering movements made during the vehicle’s last forward maneuver are stored by the system and retained. This means the Back-Up Assistant can be used to maneuver the new BMW X5 M or X6 M backwards out of a parking position that it drove into forwards the previous day. The driver enjoys ideal all-round visibility, thanks to both the standard rear-view camera and the optional Top View, Panorama View and 3D View which are part of Parking Assistant Plus, which create a 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings in the Center Display. In addition, drivers can use the Remote 3D View feature, part of the BMW ConnectedDrive App, to access a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and surroundings on a smartphone no matter where they are at that moment. BMW Connected: digital services for individual mobility. BMW Connected is the companion app for BMW drivers. Intelligent connectivity helps users to reach their destination easily and with minimal stress – and not only from within their car; BMW Connected is an all-embracing concept designed to seamlessly connect the driver and their smartphone with their vehicle. At the heart of it all is the Open Mobility Cloud, which allows the app to connect the car with the customer’s digital devices. These could include the iPhone and Apple Watch, smartphones and smartwatches running the Android operating system, Alexa-compatible smart devices and Google Home. For instance, the BMW Connected app can import appointments and addresses from the customer’s calendar entries straight into the navigation system to begin route guidance. The system calculates the optimum departure time based on real-time traffic information and notifies the driver with a message on their smartphone when it is time to leave. As the vehicle is linked up via the Open Mobility Cloud, it is able to access the calculated route directly when the navigation system starts up.
