BMW 530e Inductive Charging Pilot Program Named Green Car Journal’s 2020 Green Car Technology of the Year.

BMW is honored to receive the Green Car Journal’s Green Car Technology of the Year award for its Inductive Charging Pilot Program. The Pilot Program allows participating BMW customers to test and provide valuable feedback on using wireless inductive technology to charge their BMW 530e plug-in-hybrid sedans, instead of having to plug the vehicle in using a wall-mounted charging box. BMW is the first automotive manufacturer to make this technology available to customers in the marketplace. The pilot program began in Germany in 2018, and expanded to the U.S. in mid-2019. Available in the state of California for a small group of qualifying residential home customers, the program included a 36-month lease of a specially equipped 530e sedan and home installation of the inductive charging equipment. more BMW Wireless Charging consists of an Inductive Charging Station (GroundPad) and a secondary vehicle component (CarPad) fixed to the underside of the vehicle. The contactless transfer of energy between the GroundPad and CarPad is completed over a distance of around three inches. The inductive charging components generate a magnetic field, which allows for the safe transfer of energy with an efficiency rate of around 85%. The system has a charging power of 3.2 kW, enabling the high-voltage batteries on board the BMW 530e to be fully charged in around three and a half hours. “BMW Wireless Charging represents a milestone in the evolution of vehicle electrification, making owning and driving a plug-in hybrid vehicle an even more seamless experience,” said Ron Cogan, Editor and Publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. “Today’s pairing of BMW’s innovative inductive charging and 530e plug-in hybrid illustrates how the future of automatic electric vehicle charging can be as simple as parking your car. It’s a deserving winner of 2020 Green Car Technology of the Year™.”

Take a look at the future of connectivity with BMW

The future of connectivity. The BMW Group has always met the challenges of digitalisation head-on – and has been instrumental in shaping and driving forward its implementation and ongoing development in the automotive sector. The premium carmaker has likewise been quick to embrace 5G technology, adhering to the maxim “act like a start-up – deliver like a grown-up” wholeheartedly in the process. The new mobile standard is set to catapult mobile networks into a whole new dimension, courtesy of bandwidth 10 to 100 times greater than that of current standards and minimal latency. 5G paves the way to unprecedented levels of connectivity and high-speed data exchange, which will be a key driver for industry as a whole. Its primary benefit in the automotive sector will be to greatly speed up the development and rollout of autonomous driving – or even make it possible in some instances. 5G in the new BMW iNext. The BMW Group has been breaking new ground for some time now with the implementation and integration of 5G-capable applications in its models. When the first examples of the BMW iNext make their debut in mid-2021, 5G technology will be present and correct. This will make the BMW Group the world’s first premium carmaker to offer the new mobile technology in one of its models. The introduction of 5G into other model ranges will commence soon after, although integration will vary according to the specific model and configuration. The BMW iNext’s built-in SIM card will be used to provide 5G capability, meaning customers will benefit from the new technology in their car even if they don’t have a 5G smartphone. The new generation of 5G telematics componentry is under development as part of a collaboration with HARMAN Samsung, with the BMW Group responsible for its integration into the vehicle’s new electrical system architecture.

Take a look at BMW's highlights at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020 – taking place in Las Vegas on 7 – 10 January 2020 – the BMW Group will be presenting its visionary approaches to creating the mobility experience of the future. The premium carmaker’s presence at CES 2020 can be summed up by the hashtag #ChangeYourPerspective. At its heart is the company’s firm belief in its ability to not only understand the requirements of future mobility but also find answers to them. The BMW Group stand showcases this change in perspective, while experiences and practical demonstrations anchor it in reality for visitors from all over the world. more A highlight of this year’s CES: the BMW i3 Urban Suite. For seven years, the BMW i3 has played the role of iconic ambassador for electric driving pleasure, sustainability and intelligent connectivity in urban areas. These qualities have helped to make it the world’s best-selling electric car in the premium compact segment. And now the BMW Group has brought the BMW i3 Urban Suite to this year’s CES in Las Vegas to reveal a mobility experience tailored entirely to the passenger’s individual needs. To achieve this, a standard BMW i3 underwent a complete transformation (with only the driver’s seat and dashboard left untouched) so that its interior now has the relaxed feel of a boutique hotel. The aim was to create an inviting space with a high feel-good factor in which to spend time – the perfect place for relaxing, enjoying in-car entertainment or focusing on work in a laid-back setting. This has been achieved by including, among other things, a large, comfortable seat with footrest, a screen that flips down from the headliner and a personal Sound Zone. The BMW i3 Urban Suite also represents a logical step forward in the BMW Group’s commitment to sustainable mobility. The vehicle is underpinned by a holistic approach to making responsible use of resources, encompassing the powertrain with zero local emissions, the careful selection of materials and the production processes involved. Fabrics containing recycled materials, therefore, come together with certified wood and olive-tanned leather, while the floor mats are made from recyclable materials that can be fed back into the materials cycle, as per circular economy principles. In preparation for the CES, a fleet of standard BMW i3 cars were converted into Urban Suites in Munich then brought to Las Vegas, where they can also be seen gracing the city’s streets. Indeed, anyone wishing to be chauffeur-driven to their desired destination can use a special app to order one of the BMW i3 Urban Suites. The car will offer its passenger a first-hand experience of the BMW Group’s innovative and sustainable mobility concept, while clearly demonstrating that luxury travel in the future will have nothing to do with vehicle size. The BMW i3 Urban Suite is just one of the highlights of the BMW Group stand at CES 2020 in Las Vegas. Comprehensive information on all elements of the vehicle will be available when the show opens on 7 January.

The BMW 8 Series Convertible Goes Street Art Cruising at Art Basel Miami Beach.

BMW continued its global partnership with Art Basel at the 2019 Miami Beach fair. In line with the brand’s decades-long commitment to culture and the arts, BMW supported panel discussions, VIP shuttle services to and from the fair, and a street art mural tour that paid homage to Miami’s reputation as a hub for such works. Street artist Spencer Mar Guilburt and visual artist Alexandre Arrechea teamed up for the mural tour, taking the stunning BMW 8 Series Convertible for a spin through Miami’s famous Wynwood and Midtown Design Districts. Miami, legendary for its storied street art murals and multiple arts and culture-focused neighborhoods, served as the backdrop for an engaging discussion between Arrechea and Guilburt. The two artists discussed their beginnings, motivations, and an exploration of their artistic styles in relation to street art; they also shared insider perspectives on the importance of street art’s ability to involve all people, not just artists, in art. The BMW M850i xDrive Convertible provided the perfect open-top venue for street art viewing, enveloping its creative passengers in a premium cabin powered by a 530 HP TwinPower Turbo V8 engine. Arrechea, a Cuba native and visual artist, exhibited works for Art Basel Miami Beach 2019 at the Nara Roesler Gallery; Guilburt, known for his renowned street art murals that showcase his signature “Fire Flower” shapes, is a BMW Group Culture Ambassador hailing from Santa Monica, California.

The BMW Group and Straus Organic Dairy Farm Deliver Clean Energy for California

When the BMW Group started producing electric vehicles, the objective was to make sustainability a core component not just of the cars themselves, but of every element from design to engineering, supply chain to manufacturing. Now this holistic approach to sustainability extends to the electricity that goes into the cars as well. Today, the BMW Group and Straus Organic Dairy Farm announced a partnership that will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from farming while simultaneously delivering the cleanest possible fuel to EV drivers in California. When owners plug in their cars to charge, they will be helping to bring new renewable energy to dairy farms throughout the state. A methane biodigester at Straus Organic Dairy Farm in Marshall, California, captures methane from cow manure, which would otherwise enter the atmosphere as a powerful greenhouse gas. This methane captured from the cow manure is transformed into renewable energy, which is exported to the public power grid, replacing the need for fossil fuels. By delivering a ‘double’ emissions reduction, biodigesters can produce electricity that has negative carbon intensity, according the California Air Resources Board. more “This collaboration is the first of its kind in the auto industry,” said Bernhard Kuhnt, president and CEO, BMW of North America. “It is a perfect fit for the BMW Group, which has long valued creative technologies and partnerships that can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.” “With the current climate change crisis; the relationship that we’re forging with BMW is essential,” said Albert Straus, founder and CEO of Straus Family Creamery. “In addition to being a great collaboration, we are developing the blueprint for a model that can generate revenue for other farmers throughout California.” Over the coming years, the BMW Group anticipates that the renewable energy generated by partnerships like this will equal the electricity needs of every BMW and MINI electric vehicle in the state of California. “We are well on our way to ensuring that every electric mile driven by BMW and MINI owners in California is covered,” said Adam Langton, BMW USA Energy Services Manager. For the BMW Group, this initiative is yet a further step in facilitating the use of renewable energy for electric vehicles. The BMW ChargeForward pilot program, which operates in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, makes it possible for participating owners to charge their vehicles with as much solar energy as possible, while also helping the stability of the public electricity grid.
