The BMW Group is continuing to drive the digitalisation of access to its vehicles in co-development with Apple and Google. It is now possible to share a BMW Digital Key across platforms between iPhone and Android devices. Previously, keys could only be shared via Apple iMessage. There is now no longer any need for a specific app or a set method of transmission. Instead, keys can be easily passed on to friends or family from the wallet using the native “share” function known from many apps. This means that sharing a BMW Digital Key now takes the straightforward form of sending a link. The key can be sent by e-mail, SMS or any other messaging service, e.g. WhatsApp. The recipient does not require either a specific app or a BMW ID. To add the Digital Key to their wallet, they simply click on the link. If the owner and recipient are standing next to each other, the key can also be shared via Apple AirDrop or Android Nearby Share. In certain cases, an activation code may have to be entered in the vehicle for security reasons, which the sender would ideally disclose to the recipient via a different channel. Once a digital key has been received on an iPhone, the recipient can add it to an Apple Watch just as easily. This new function is available for all new vehicles with BMW Digital Key or BMW Digital Key Plus. Older suitably equipped vehicles will be able to make full use of this feature once their software has been updated to status “22-11” or later via Remote Software Upgrade. Cross-platform sharing will initially be available for compatible iPhones and Google smartphones*, with models from Samsung set to follow shortly. This latest upgrade is the result of a close collaboration between BMW and its partners Apple, Google and Samsung under the umbrella of the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC). It marks another milestone for the BMW Digital Key en route to complete cross-platform interoperability – and towards securing the status of smartphones as digital vehicle keys. If you completed an Electronic Subscriber Agreement (ESA) for your vehicle, then the vehicle should already be associated to your ConnectedDrive account. Otherwise, if you need to manually add a vehicle, you can do that via the My BMW ConnectedDrive portal (www.bmwusa.com/MyBMWConnectedDrive). You can also add a vehicle to your account using BMW Connected, as long as no other vehicle is associated with your account. If another vehicle is already included in your account, you will not be given the option to add a new vehicle via the new BMW Connected app. more a) Log into BMW Connected with your appropriate ConnectedDrive username and password combination. You will then be required to create a four digit PIN for BMW Connected and confirm whether you would like to enable login using Touch ID® (on applicable iOS devices) b) At the “Register Vehicle” screen, enter the last 7 digits of your vehicle’s VIN, then select “Verify” c) Next, select whether you would like to be the Primary Driver (Subscriber) or Secondary Driver (Subscriber) d) Complete the profile by entering your name, address, etc. e) A security code will be sent to your vehicle. This code can be retrieved in your vehicle by going to the “ConnectedDrive” > “Messages” menu. Please note, this code will expire after 4 hours f) Once you retrieve the security code, enter it into the app. Once successful, you will receive notification that the vehicle has been added to your account Is it possible for two people, who both use the same vehicle, to each have separate access to the BMW Connected app on their own devices? Yes, multiple devices can be used to log into the same vehicle. When using the same ConnectedDrive account (i.e., username and password), the destinations shown in BMW Connected will be the same across all of the devices. If using different ConnectedDrive accounts (i.e., each person logs in with a separate username and password), the destinations will be personalized to each account.

This feature adapts to your use of the pedals in traffic situation when you drive in the 'Efficient Mode' in BMW's Operating System 8. Press the "My Modes" switch in the center console and select Efficient. Or simply tell your BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant: ”Hey BMW - switch to Efficient Mode.” Now your BMW will regulate energy consumption to maximize your driving range by automatically adjusting certain settings. Your ePower meter in the instrument cluster display shows a blue highlight. Use the pedal modestly to stay in this efficient range of acceleration. A blue glow indicates that you are doing fine. If you speed up too powerfully, the highlights and displays turn grey. Also an arrow tips you off to ease the accelerator. When “Adaptive content” is activated and you are in Efficient Mode, you get an evaluation of your driving efficiency since the start of your journey with scores out of ten for anticipation, acceleration and speed.

Series production for the first-ever BMW XM has started at BMW Manufacturing in Spartanburg, SC. TIME reveals its annual list of the Best Inventions for 2022, which features 200 extraordinary innovations. To compile the list, TIME solicited nominations from TIME’s editors and correspondents around the world, and through an online application process, paying special attention to growing fields such as the electric vehicle industry, green energy, and the metaverse. The BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink is a unique vehicle capable of changing its entire body color at the touch of a button and was first revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show 2022 in Las Vegas. By making it possible to alter the body color and display different patterns, the BMW iX Flow opens up a whole new way of personalizing the driving experience. A variable exterior color can also contribute to wellness in the interior and to the efficiency of the vehicle. This is done by taking account of the different abilities of light and dark colors when it comes to reflecting sunlight and the associated absorption of thermal energy. A white surface reflects a lot more sunlight than a black one. By implication, heating of the vehicle and passenger compartment as a result of strong sunlight and high outside temperatures can be reduced by changing the exterior to a light color. In cooler weather, a dark outer skin will help the vehicle to absorb noticeably more warmth from the sun. In both cases, selective color changes can help to cut the amount of cooling and heating required from the vehicle's air conditioning. This reduces the amount of energy the vehicle electrical system needs and with it also the vehicle's fuel or electricity consumption. In an all-electric car, changing the color in line with the weather can therefore also help to increase the range. In the interior, the technology could, for example, prevent the dashboard from heating up too much. E Ink technology itself is extremely energy efficient. Unlike displays or projectors, the electrophoretic technology needs absolutely no energy to keep the chosen color state constant. Current only flows during the short color changing phase. Millions of paint capsules in a custom wrap. Electrophoretic coloring is based on a technology developed by E Ink that is most well-known from the displays used in eReaders. The surface coating of the BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink contains many millions of microcapsules, with a diameter equivalent to the thickness of a human hair. Each of these microcapsules contains negatively charged white pigments and positively charged black pigments. Depending on the chosen setting, stimulation by means of an electrical field causes either the white or the black pigments to collect at the surface of the microcapsule, giving the car body the desired shade.
