In just a few months’ time, the eighth generation of the BMW 5 Series will make its debut. The new model will be more dynamic and more comfortable than ever, with a fresh interpretation of its signature, elegantly sporting design. The new 5 will feature BMW Operating System 8.5 with the BMW Curved Display, innovative digital services, and, for the first time, a purely electric drivetrain in the form of the BMW i5. more The flexible powertrain architecture means the new BMW 5 Series can be offered in all-electric and plug-in hybrid variants alongside highly efficient internal combustion engines with 48V mild hybrid technology. The new zero-layer principle means that all relevant functions and information are shown on a single level, making it possible to select a desired function without first having to enter a submenu. And once the relevant settings have been chosen, a quick tap on the home icon at the lower edge of the display is all it takes to return to the home screen. The operating concept for the new BMW iDrive therefore aligns with user habits established with today’s consumer electronics devices. The new, flat menu structure makes activating functions and settings much faster and simpler. At the same time, the system goes a long way towards enriching the driving experience in a BMW. It is able to distinguish who is talking and appears at the view of the driver or front passenger. A warm welcome from vehicle to driver “Great Entrance Moments” guides the customer to their car, facilitates entry, welcomes them and makes sure they are perfectly prepared for the journey ahead. As soon as the distance between vehicle and key drops below three metres, the vehicle starts to wake up and indicates this with a gradually intensifying, dynamic lighting effect. Once the driver moves within one-and-a-half metres, the vehicle unlocks and signals that it is getting ready to drive by folding out the exterior mirrors. Opening a door activates the seat’s entry assistance feature along with the surface and steering wheel heating. The personal settings from the BMW ID are loaded and a connection is established with the driver’s smartphone while they are still getting into the car.
