BMW continued its global partnership with Art Basel at the 2019 Miami Beach fair. In line with the brand’s decades-long commitment to culture and the arts, BMW supported panel discussions, VIP shuttle services to and from the fair, and a street art mural tour that paid homage to Miami’s reputation as a hub for such works. Street artist Spencer Mar Guilburt and visual artist Alexandre Arrechea teamed up for the mural tour, taking the stunning BMW 8 Series Convertible for a spin through Miami’s famous Wynwood and Midtown Design Districts. Miami, legendary for its storied street art murals and multiple arts and culture-focused neighborhoods, served as the backdrop for an engaging discussion between Arrechea and Guilburt. The two artists discussed their beginnings, motivations, and an exploration of their artistic styles in relation to street art; they also shared insider perspectives on the importance of street art’s ability to involve all people, not just artists, in art. The BMW M850i xDrive Convertible provided the perfect open-top venue for street art viewing, enveloping its creative passengers in a premium cabin powered by a 530 HP TwinPower Turbo V8 engine. Arrechea, a Cuba native and visual artist, exhibited works for Art Basel Miami Beach 2019 at the Nara Roesler Gallery; Guilburt, known for his renowned street art murals that showcase his signature “Fire Flower” shapes, is a BMW Group Culture Ambassador hailing from Santa Monica, California.

When the download is completed, you need to connect your smartphone to your vehicle. With the Wi-Fi connection established, the software upgrade is uploaded to your BMW only during the journey. When the BMW Group started producing electric vehicles, the objective was to make sustainability a core component not just of the cars themselves, but of every element from design to engineering, supply chain to manufacturing. Now this holistic approach to sustainability extends to the electricity that goes into the cars as well. Today, the BMW Group and Straus Organic Dairy Farm announced a partnership that will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from farming while simultaneously delivering the cleanest possible fuel to EV drivers in California. When owners plug in their cars to charge, they will be helping to bring new renewable energy to dairy farms throughout the state. A methane biodigester at Straus Organic Dairy Farm in Marshall, California, captures methane from cow manure, which would otherwise enter the atmosphere as a powerful greenhouse gas. This methane captured from the cow manure is transformed into renewable energy, which is exported to the public power grid, replacing the need for fossil fuels. By delivering a ‘double’ emissions reduction, biodigesters can produce electricity that has negative carbon intensity, according the California Air Resources Board. more “This collaboration is the first of its kind in the auto industry,” said Bernhard Kuhnt, president and CEO, BMW of North America. “It is a perfect fit for the BMW Group, which has long valued creative technologies and partnerships that can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.” “With the current climate change crisis; the relationship that we’re forging with BMW is essential,” said Albert Straus, founder and CEO of Straus Family Creamery. “In addition to being a great collaboration, we are developing the blueprint for a model that can generate revenue for other farmers throughout California.” Over the coming years, the BMW Group anticipates that the renewable energy generated by partnerships like this will equal the electricity needs of every BMW and MINI electric vehicle in the state of California. “We are well on our way to ensuring that every electric mile driven by BMW and MINI owners in California is covered,” said Adam Langton, BMW USA Energy Services Manager. For the BMW Group, this initiative is yet a further step in facilitating the use of renewable energy for electric vehicles. The BMW ChargeForward pilot program, which operates in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, makes it possible for participating owners to charge their vehicles with as much solar energy as possible, while also helping the stability of the public electricity grid.

The BMW Group took a leading role in the seamless integration of smart devices and the customers’ digital ecosystem in the early stages. Providing customers with simple, connected and “keyless” access to their vehicles has been a key area of innovation. Today, it is already possible to lock and unlock the vehicle, start the engine and share the key with others using the BMW Digital Key as part of BMW Connected on the smartphone. But this is only the first step in a global technological transformation being shaped and led by the BMW Group. In 2017, the company joined the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), where it is a leader in establishing cross-industry, standardized technologies and security standards. As a result of this commitment, the latest generation of a standardized ecosystem for vehicle access that will enable new functions across multiple devices and different manufacturers was recently announced. more Global standards for greater interoperability The Digital Key has the potential to enable a range of use cases that are not possible with a classic vehicle key, due to the technological advantages of smart devices. Uniform technology standards are needed to turn the vision of digital vehicle access into reality. Full functionality must be available on various customer devices from different vendors and regardless of the vehicle manufacturer. This is highlighted by Dr. Olaf Müller, head of Development Digital Access Systems at the BMW Group: “Our customers want cross-vendor interoperability. Standardization is the only way to achieve this; proprietary solutions are no longer beneficial.” The BMW Group has therefore been driving the creation of a global standard for digital vehicle access within the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC). Most well-known smartphone producers and automotive manufacturers have already joined the consortium. Standard specifications across industries will also help include all kinds of smart devices, including phones, watches and other wearables. Technological specifications for innovative functions The second generation (release 2.0) of an NFC-based digital key ecosystem has been announced for late 2019. A key feature is the use of a security chip that works separately from the smartphone operating system. This means it also works if the smartphone cannot be started anymore, because the battery is too low. In the near future, Digital Key specification will be enhanced by the ultra-wideband (UWB)-based release 3.0. This will offer maximum anti-theft protection and enable precise localization between the device and the vehicle. As a result, the mobile phone must no longer be held directly up to the door handle to unlock the car, but can conveniently be left in the pocket. The BMW Group recognized early that UWB technology would be beneficial over the long term and suitable for global market penetration. The close cooperation with partners and the fact that UWB is already finding its way into more and more customer devices will pave the way for new and innovative Digital Key features.
