Pricing does not include $995 Destination. more M V8 Power and Performance The 2021 BMW M5 is powered by the S63 4.4-liter TwinPower turbocharged V8 engine producing 600 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 553 ft-lbs. of torque from 1,800 – 5,690 rpm. The M5 Sedan accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (190 mph when equipped with the optional M Driver’s Package). The M5 Competition Sedan’s engine tuning increases power to 617 hp @ 6,000 rpm and offers a 170 rpm-wider torque band, 553 ft-lbs. @ 1,800 – 5,860 rpm. The Competition model accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (190 mph when equipped with the optional M Driver’s Package). The engine features two-turbochargers, cross-bank exhaust manifolds, direct injection and upgraded cooling and oil supply. The cross-bank exhaust manifolds improve turbocharger and throttle response by reducing the distance the exhaust gases need to flow to reach the turbochargers. Water-to-air intercooling helps reduce the temperature of the incoming air for improved power. The advanced cooling system is composed of two separate water circuits, one for the intercoolers and one for the engine and turbochargers. An electric cooling pump ensures that the turbochargers receive sufficient coolant flow even after the engine has been turned off. An additional engine oil cooler and transmission oil cooler ensure the M5 is capable of standing up to the higher thermal demands of track driving. The oil supply system features a secondary front chamber in the oil pan which is accessed by a map-controlled oil suction pump to insure effective oil supply during extreme lateral and longitudinal forces. M xDrive and Sport Steptronic transmission The rear-biased M xDrive all-wheel drive system distributes the available 553 ft-lbs. of torque between front and rear axles via an electronically-controlled multi-plate clutch while the Active M Differential further splits torque between left and right rear wheels. The driver can select from three xDrive modes including 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD. The Dynamic Stability Control system can be adjusted between three settings to further enhance driver control – DSC ON, MDM (M Dynamic Mode) and DSC OFF. The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission provides extraordinarily short shift times and fast, precise responses to every input of the accelerator. The Drivelogic switch on the gear selector lever allows three modes - efficient, sport or track with extremely rapid gearshifts. A transmission oil cooler ensures the transmission operates within its best temperature range even when the car is put through its paces on the track. Suspension and Steering The M5 features a double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension design to deliver neutral steering behavior and precise chassis responses. The standard Dynamic Damper Control and M Servotronic steering offer a choice of electronic drive modes – COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+. Each setting provides firmer suspension settings and increased steering force to make the M5 Sedan equally capable on city streets, winding roads and the most demanding race tracks. The 2021 BMW M5 Competition receives new shocks and a recalibrated damper control system to enhance ride comfort during high-speed highway driving as well as over bumps. Compared to the M5, the Competition model also sits 0.2-inches lower and features increased front negative camber, a firmer rear anti-roll bar, 10% firmer front and rear springs and toe-link ball joint mounts (vs. rubber bushings in the M5 Sedan). Wheels, Tires and Brakes The M5 Sedan is equipped with standard 19 x 9.5-inch front and 19 x 10.5-inch rear M alloy bicolor wheels with 275/40R19 front and 285/40R19 rear performance non-run-flat tires. The M5 Competition is equipped with 20 x 9.5-inch front and 20 x 10.5-inch rear forged M alloy wheels with 275/35R20 and 285/35R20 rear performance non-run-flat tires. The M5 Sedan is equipped with standard M Compound brakes with vented disks and blue six-piston front calipers. High gloss black or red calipers are available as no-cost options. The optional M Carbon Ceramic brakes with gold-finished calipers are 50 lbs lighter, not only reducing unsprung weight but also providing greater thermal stability and fade resistance under the most extreme braking conditions. Exterior Design The new, larger BMW kidney grille and redesigned front and rear bumpers highlight the more aggressive and functional appearance of the 2021 M5 Sedan. The kidney grille now extends further down into the front bumper and features a one-piece chrome surround element. The front bumper shows aggressive lines with larger air intakes on either side. The large hexagonal center intake area provides space for the oil cooler and radar sensor. New L-shaped light tubes within the slimmer, redesigned LED headlights give a more focused, modern appearance to the M5. In the rear, the signature M-specific quad exhaust pipes are framed by the more muscular, restyled rear bumper and diffuser. New rear L-shaped taillights feature a three-dimensional lens design. The M5 Competition comes with a black finish for the BMW kidney grille surround, the front fender side-gill mesh inserts, the exterior mirror caps, the rear trunk spoiler, name badges and rear bumper inserts. The tips of the Competition model’s M Sport exhaust system are finished in Black Chrome. Interior Equipment The interior of the 2021 M5 Sedan is highlighted by the standard Live Cockpit Professional with iDrive 7, a 12.3” digital instrument display and a 12.3” digital central touchscreen central information display (up from previous 10.25”). Standard navigation, Apple CarPlay Compatibility and Android Auto Compatibility are included. This benefits already enjoyed by Apple iPhone owners are now available to Android users, making it easier to access a large number of digital services from the car in the same way as on their smartphone. These include Google Assistant, Google Maps, music streaming services like Spotify and Amazon Music and the WhatsApp messaging service. M Mode button Accessing the various M mode settings is now easier on the 2021 M5, courtesy of the new M8. A single M mode button replaces the previous individual buttons for the engine, chassis, suspension, steering and xDrive system. Default Road mode – all standard and optional driver assist systems are fully operational. Full information displays in the digital instrument display and Head-Up display. Sport mode – Allows the driver to adjust or turn off various assist systems. The M View is activated for both the instrument cluster and Head-Up display. A tachometer, digital speed, selected gear and shift lights are displayed in the center with coolant temperature, tire pressure and longitudinal and lateral forces available to the left and right. Track mode – available on M5 Competition model and accessed by pressing and holding down the M Mode button. Designed for use on closed tracks, confirmation of this mode is required via the iDrive controller. Driver assistance system intervention is turned off. The audio system and center control display are turned off so the driver may concentrate on the road ahead with important information provided via the Head-Up and the digital instrument displays. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and new BMW Maps The 2021 BMW M5 Sedan comes equipped with standard Assist features designed to deliver peace of mind and improved driving comfort. Included systems are Lane Departure Warning with steering correction (to keep you in the lane), frontal collision and pedestrian warning with braking function (which allows for reaction to vehicles, stationary objects, cyclists and pedestrians), blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert (which warns of possible crossing traffic when backing up), rear collision preparation, automatic high beams and speed limit information. Optional on the M5 is the Driving Assistance Professional Package which adds Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Extended Traffic Jam Assist for limited access highways – a Level 2 autonomous assist system which helps to reduce fatigue in stop and go freeway traffic by allowing for extended hands free vehicle operation – Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision avoidance, Evasion Aid, Front Cross-Traffic Alert and Emergency Stop Assistant – which can help guide your BMW to the shoulder and bring it to a halt in a medical emergency situation. The navigation has also been improved with a new digital cloud-based feature called BMW Maps. The benefits are faster route calculations and dynamic recalculation based on precise real-time traffic data. The route is worked out using an anticipatory approach, meaning upcoming traffic along the entire route is factored into the calculation of the expected arrival time. Complete traffic data is now available for more minor roads, too. Hazard warnings transmitted online from the BMW fleet now reach the car even faster thanks to connected navigation. These improvements help to produce a very accurate estimate of arrival time and improved route guidance. The destination input function has also been improved and now lets the driver enter any word. Alternatively, the destination can be entered at any time simply by voice control. Plus, points of interest (POIs) along the route are described in greater detail, with reviews, opening times and photos. BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant The new 2021 M5 Sedan also offers the latest version of BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant to help interact with your car in a more natural way. Activated by a spoken prompt, such as “Hey BMW” or at the touch of a button, this digital companion learns the way you communicate to provide better and more accurate responses. Naturally spoken instructions can now also be used to open and close the car’s windows (partially or fully) or adjust the air conditioning. In addition, the driver can set rules by which the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant learns routines that increase convenience in specific situations. For instance, the driver’s window could be opened automatically when the vehicle reaches a chosen location via GPS coordinates, such as the entrance to a garage. Click here for the full article

July will bring a comprehensive software upgrade with numerous new services to BMW Connected System

New services such as the cloud-based navigation BMW Maps, Digital Key for iPhone and an update for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG: “Digital technologies belong to the core of BMW – because hardware and software are of equal importance for premium cars. Our mission is to integrate advanced digital technologies with highest product excellence to enhance our customers’ experience and driving pleasure even more.” more 1. Overview. In July 2020, BMW will release its most comprehensive vehicle software upgrade to date, with new and improved features for vehicle connectivity and navigation. These features will be included straight from the factory with every BMW vehicle that has Operating System 7, such as the new BMW 5 Series. And for certain compatible BMW vehicles built before July, already in customers’ hands, these great new updates can even be added with a free over-the-air software upgrade, available from third quarter onwards. BMW Maps offers a completely new navigation experience: Faster, more intuitive, and more accurate. Destinations can be entered more easily. New cloud-based route calculation brings a significant improvement in performance. BMW Maps also provides contextual information for points of interest, such as ratings, business hours and images. Connected Parking also supports the search for parking spaces with additional services. The BMW Digital Key, which has just been announced at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, turns an iPhone into a fully digital – and secure - vehicle key. With the upgrade, BMW vehicles receive wireless support of Google’s Android AutoTM. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is getting a new design and has been enhanced with numerous intelligent functions. For example, the virtual character now turns towards the person talking and can distinguish between addressing the driver and the passenger. Since 2018, the Remote Software Upgrade has enabled BMW drivers with compatible vehicles to keep their vehicle up to date with the latest software, just like with a smartphone. The new functions can be downloaded and installed over-the-air. This is particularly convenient and extremely fast: even for extensive upgrades, hardly more than 20 minutes of installation time is required. 2. Digital personalization with functions on demand. Flexible offers, available immediately, simple to book and easy to use. BMW sees the car as a digital platform. More than two decades ago, BMW ConnectedDrive paved the way to more individual mobility. Since then, the company has been enabling its customers to benefit from the rapid technological development at any time with the continuously added digital services. With Remote Software Upgrade, BMW has created the technical basis for keeping vehicles up to date, adding additional vehicle functions, and installing them quickly and easily over the air. BMW already offers its customers digital services and additional vehicle functions in the form of digital after-sales, some of which are deeply embedded in the vehicle's software. In the US, BMW Drive Recorder is offered through a pilot program. In the near future, additional functions will be added that can access the vehicle's existing hardware and software, such as certain comfort functions or driver assistance systems. With the option of subsequently booking additional vehicle functions via the ConnectedDrive Store, BMW is strengthening selection and personalization for customers, offering them maximum flexibility. BMW provides the hardware and software in the vehicle at the time of manufacture for the implementation so that it can be adapted later on as required and in accordance with customer preferences. If, for example, vehicle functions were not yet requested at the time of purchase, they can be added later. A second owner thus can configure the used vehicle according to their own wishes. BMW is also exploring avenues to expand in-car communication in the future. BMW will be able to offer its customers tailor-made services directly in the vehicle depending on the situation – if the driver so desires. The introduction of the BMW iNext will further expand the opportunities for personalization. 3. BMW Maps. The new cloud-based navigation promises relaxed driving and safe arrival. Arrive faster, safer and more relaxed: the next generation of the online routing service offers a completely new type of route guidance and usability. The cloud-based system enables a significant improvement in performance, makes navigation more agile, and impresses customers with its intuitive destination entry and high level of accuracy. BMW Maps calculates routes faster and more dynamically than before by combining real-time information with prediction models. Free text input in the search bar ensures a contemporary user experience. As an intuitive input line, it allows free search for destinations, just like on smartphones and search engines. Of course, BMW Maps can also be controlled easily and conveniently by voice using the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. BMW Maps lists the search results based on the vehicle's position and provides contextual information on the destination such as images, opening hours and ratings, as well as an indication of the parking situation at the destination. The cloud-based navigation enables a continuous update of the expected arrival time. Using real-time traffic information (RTTI) as well as historical and extrapolated data, BMW Maps keeps the driver informed at all times, optimally adjusts routes and keeps an eye on potential danger spots. Thanks to the very comprehensive data volume on traffic, even on smaller streets, BMW Maps avoids unnecessary detours through residential areas. These services are also made possible by the consolidated information from over 14 million BMW vehicles. The connected cars transmit anonymized data on current traffic conditions on-site and allow other BMW vehicles to benefit from it, for example on traffic flow or danger spots. For navigation, BMW Maps always uses the latest map material, which is regularly updated over-the-air. More support around parking with Connected Parking services. Connected Parking supports the search for a parking space at the arrival point with various service. On-Street Parking Information not only shows the driver parking spaces, but also calculates the probability that a parking space is free based on the available data. The service now also takes the size of the vehicle into account when comparing it with the parking space ready at the destination. 4. Connected Charging. Comprehensive charging services for plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles. Electrified vehicles benefit from the extended possibilities of the innovative Connected Charging services. (Specific functions and availability vary by country.) The charge management as an essential component allows customers to view details of past charging processes in the app, define specific time windows in which the car should be charged – especially helpful in the context of fluctuating electricity prices during the course of the day – and can send push notifications directly to the customer’s smartphone when charging events occur. The services in the area of public charging have been expanded to include additional detailed information on the individual charging stations, such as opening hours, providers, or authentication options. Additionally, it displays their availability at first sight. Furthermore, points of interest such as cafés or restaurants near the charging station are listed to make the best use of charging time. The driver has optimum transparency regarding range and charging status at all times, both in the vehicle and via app. For fully electrified vehicles, a range indication in the form of a blue circle on the map overview is added. If the BMW recognizes that the driver needs a break, it automatically suggests a suitable stopover, including available charging options. The optimized route planner for electrified vehicles proactively and automatically adds charging stations according to the route and schedule and takes rapid charging stations into account. 5. BMW Digital Key for iPhone. BMW is the first car manufacturer to enable its customers to use their iPhone as a fully digital car key. The digital key from BMW is stored on a chip in the iPhone as a so-called secure element and communicates with the vehicle using NFC technology. It was developed according to the standards of the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), to which both Apple and BMW belong. Not only does the digital key make it possible to open and close the car without a physical key, the car can also be started via iPhone. The customer furthermore has the option of sharing the key with up to five users quickly and easily via smartphone. This technology can even regulate the vehicle’s use: for example, if the key is shared with an inexperienced or young driver, the owner of the master key can set limits for speed, power (HP) and radio volume. The digital key can also manage several vehicles simultaneously. The NFC hardware required for the digital key is available for vehicles produced from July 2020. 6. Android Auto. The BMW Group is extending the reach of seamless connectivity in its vehicles with the introduction of Android Auto™. Android Auto is a safe and easy way to use Android smartphone functions during a journey - whether that's music, messaging, or navigation. You can use the Google Assistant to interact with your smartphone with your voice, and see the results on your BMW's widescreen display. The highlights of the Android Auto at BMW are the seamless and wireless integration and the intelligent adoption of turn-by-turn guidance from Google Maps™ in the instrument cluster’s Info Display as well as in the Head-Up Display. 7. BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. A personal assistant with character in the cockpit. The interaction between driver and vehicle will grow increasingly important in the future. Around 70 percent of BMW customers use voice commands. In the future, arguably even more BMW drivers will operate their vehicle by voice. In addition to a new design, the Intelligent Personal Assistant also has numerous new functions with the 07/20 update. With its revised appearance, BMW is emphasizing the assistant's agile and emotional character. The virtual assistant leans towards the respective conversation partner and can thus differentiate even more clearly between the way it addresses the driver and the passenger. Thanks to the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, a BMW expert is always on board. The driver can ask BMW related questions and receive a wealth of vehicle information. For example, the customer can ask for tips on how to drive more efficiently. Additional functions in the car can also be controlled by voice command using the Personal Assistant – for example, to open or close the windows. In addition, the various driving modes can be activated by voice. With the help of vehicle data such as the GPS signal, the assistant can also automate the driver’s routines and adapt accordingly, for example, by automatically opening the window when entering a parking garage. With the new update, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant provides more proactive assistance with possible voice commands to improve natural interaction. The suggestions are also displayed in the newly designed widget. These suggestions are not selected randomly but based on the respective driving situation. 8. Data Strategy. Control and maximum benefit for the customer. The latest BMW models are networked with their environment through numerous digital services. Many of the new services and functions that have been introduced with this latest upgrade would not be possible without adequate data. BMW Group's strategy in dealing with data is essentially aimed at improving the comfort, safety and efficiency of products and services without compromising on security and privacy. BMW therefore only collects and uses data for specific purposes. Customers can choose which digital services they wish to use and transmit relevant data from the vehicle for this purpose. With BMW CarData, customers have transparency and control over their personal data and can decide for themselves whether and with which service providers they want to share data. To access the CarData service in the U.S., a customer must have a telematics-enabled BMW vehicle with a built-in SIM card registered in the ConnectedDrive portal. Customers will have access to the most important telematics data from their vehicle which is securely sent from the vehicle to secure BMW servers. A customer can request a BMW CarData report at any time which shows three types of vehicle data: Condition data (such as mileage); usage-based data (such as average fuel consumption); and event data (such as an automated service call). There is more to come, too. In the future, BMW customers will be able to use the connectivity of their vehicle for convenient third-party. This data link will happen through the secure BMW CarData system, without any direct access by third-party services to BMW vehicles. Customers stay in full control over the data that is shared, with whom, and for how long. A CarData report of the data released to third parties is available for customers to download at any time via the ConnectedDrive portal. BMW now can display app content from your Android smartphone

Smartphone integration on the next level. BMW now can display app content from your Android smartphone in the Digital Instrument Cluster and in the Head-up Display. Android Auto doesn’t need any cable connection – you only have to pair your smartphone with your BMW for the first time. The apps look and work the same as on your phone. Could it be any easier?

BMW announces support for Digital Key for iPhone. A secure and easy way to use iPhone as a car key to lock, unlock, drive, and share keys with friends.

At today’s Apple Worldwide Developer Conference it was announced that BMW will become the first carmaker to enable its customers to use iPhone as a fully digital car key. BMW was the first to integrate iPod in their vehicles, first to offer wireless CarPlay and now first to introduce support for BMW Digital Key stored securely in Apple Wallet for iPhone. BMW Digital Key for the iPhone. The upcoming BMW Digital Key for the iPhone will enable customers to just tap to unlock and easily get going by placing the iPhone in the smartphone tray and pushing the start button. Setup of the Digital Key can be done through the BMW Smartphone App. The car owner can also share access with up to 5 friends including a configurable car access option for young drivers which restricts top speed, horse power, maximum radio volume and more. Management of access can be done from inside the car as well as through Apple Wallet. more Additional features of the new Digital Key include: - Storage in the Secure Element of your iPhone and access through Apple Wallet - Power reserve for iPhone where car keys will still function for up to five hours if the iPhone turns off due to low battery - Ability to share access with up to 5 friends via iMessage - Apple Watch compatibility BMW is a leading contributors to the Digital Key standard. The BMW Group was quick to recognise the potential of smartphones as digital keys – if done right. Standardizing the Digital Key contributes to user experience, security and availability in smartphone models all of which were key to the BMW Group strategy for the Digital Key right from the start. Apple and BMW have been working closely with the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) to press ahead with the establishment of global standards. The Digital Key specification 2.0 for NFC has been released in May 2020 while the next generation of Digital Key using Ultra Wideband technology is already well underway. Broad availability for BMW models and iPhones. BMW is excited to announce the availability of Digital Key for iPhone in 45 countries for a broad range of models: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, X5, X6, X7, X5M, X6M and Z4 if manufactured after July 1st 2020. Compatible iPhone models will be iPhone XR, iPhone XS or newer and Apple Watch Series 5 or newer. At today's Apple Worldwide Developer Conference, BMW and Apple also announced a new feature that will make it easier than ever for CarPlay users to take BMW electric vehicles on longer journeys by automatically taking into account when and where to charge. Drivers can plan their trip in advance on their iPhone or simply enter their destination through Apple CarPlay when they get into the car; either way, Apple Maps will pick the optimal route based on electric range and the locations of charging stations along the way. This seamless, simple feature will first be available for BMW in the fully electric BMW i4 launching next year.
