Technology and Connectivity
BMW iDrive 8 is the most powerful and encompassing technology ever created by BMW. In recent years, there has been a huge increase in the software scopes for the iDrive system. Today, BMW’s iDrive handles a wide array of tasks that extend far beyond a conventional display and operating concept. These range from integrating telematics and connected services to data processing and preparation, connecting to devices and deep integration of third-party apps or projected modes, as well as seamless integration of cloud-based services like BMW Maps.
The BMW Group has been developing the central control unit and software integration platform in-house, entirely on Linux since 2013. Having complete control over software is crucial for creating a stable, upgradeable, high-quality system that distinguishes the brand. In the past, the BMW display and iDrive system has been overhauled on average every three years, a cycle that is roughly half as long as the complete product development cycle for a vehicle. In the era of fast-paced digital development, it is no longer enough to completely update a model’s digital features every three years, and this resulted in a fundamental change of approach in 2018.
The arrival of Remote Software Upgrade means the vehicle is now designed and conceived as a digital platform. So, when a new-generation BMW iDrive is launched, the development work is far from finished. Instead, it acts as the basis for ongoing development during the product life cycle. The interaction between the digital software platform and hardware and the ability to think of this holistically from the moment development starts are vital, as this is the only way of enabling dynamic development. The digital and functional vision aimed for at the end of the life cycle dictates what is required of the hardware in the development phase.

BMW How-To shows you how with Comfort Access and Smart opener, both the upper and lower tailgate of your BMW X5 or BMW X7 can be operated automatically. Provided you are carrying the remote control with you, the tailgate can be opened and closed without contact. Electronical devices may cause signal interference. When standing centrally behind your BMW, two sensors detect a kicking foot movement and the tailgate is opened. When pressing the button on the inside of the upper tailgate, both tailgates close automatically. When pressing the ‘lock’ button on the inside of the upper tailgate, both tailgates close and the vehicle is locked after the tailgate has been closed. To do so, the driver’s door must be closed and the remote control must be outside the vehicle in the vicinity of the tailgate.
When pressing the button on the lower tailgate, the lower tailgate opens or closes. With Smart opener, the tailgate can also be closed with the same kicking movement. In the menu, by going to “CAR”, “Settings”, “Doors/Vehicle access”, “Tailgate”, you can change the settings regarding the opening height of the tailgate. Additionally, you can select if you want to only open the upper tailgate or both tailgates when using Smart opener or the interior tailgate button in your BMW. In the Key Button Assignment menu, you can select if you want to operate the upper or both tailgates with the remote control.

In this video, BMW How-To will show you where and how to change the settings of your Head-Up Display.
Depending on model, the Head-Up Display in your BMW projects important information into the driver’s field of vision.
Depending on model, it can be found at the top of your dashboard, projecting it on the windshield.
In BMWs with Operating System 7 you can switch it on or off by going to “CAR”, “Settings”, “Displays”, “Head-up display” and check the box “Head-up display”. The brightness automatically adapts to the ambient light, but can also be manually adjusted under “Brightness”. Press “Height” and change until the desired height is obtained. The height of the Head-Up Display will also be saved with the memory function. Press “Rotation” to rotate the Head-Up Display.
