BMW In The Community

As a leader in the automotive industry, there's an opportunity - and a responsibility - to be a leader in the global community as well. To that end, BMW is constantly developing programs in the United States and around the world, dedicated to our belief in great thinking, inspired ideas and simply making the world a better place.

Global Community & Environment

Spartanburg Landfill

Imagine the energy needed to drive a car around the globe 4,300 times - over 100 million miles. That's how much energy we save each year by using methane gas from the local landfill at our Spartanburg plant instead of natural gas. As a result, the atmosphere is spared thousands of tons of greenhouse gases - 17,000 tons to be exact.

Ever since we started construction on our Spartanburg plant in 1993, our plan consisted of the efficient cogeneration of electricity and hot water. Specifically, our plan called for building a 9.5-mile pipeline from the Palmetto Landfill to our facility where we build the BMW Z4 and the BMW X5. The recycled methane gas that we get as a result of this pipeline not only provides energy for 50% of the plant's total energy, but it also helps us reduce energy costs.

While we're proud of our energy savings at Spartanburg, we know they're just part of the larger picture. BMW's global production network has reduced CO2 emissions by 30% in the last 10 years, for example, and we continue making inroads in such important places as hydrogen technology.

We believe in doing things differently at BMW, and we believe that includes committing to sustainable business practices. And, as an independent company, we have the power of putting our money where our mouth is in order to share our beliefs with the world.

Education

Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research

Creating a culture of ideas means trumpeting education. And BMW has done just that. Establishing the first International Center for Automotive Research in the country at Clemson University, BMW has not only financed the project and endowed professorships at the new graduate school, but also ultimately built a foundation to cultivate automotive learning.

BMW Group Scientific Award

Scientific Award of the BMW Group: An international research award for graduates and up-and-coming scientists

The BMW Group has conferred the Scientific Award for outstanding final theses every other year since 1991. In accordance with the multidisciplinary principle of the prize, Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral theses from any discipline will be accepted. With prize money totaling EUR 70,000, it is one of the most valuable junior research awards. The prize is not only meant as a one-off distinction. It offers young scientists a network to establish a dialogue among themselves and with representatives from the worlds of business and science. As such, regular meetings between alumni and their professors take place in addition to the award ceremonies.

 The Arts

South Carolina Children's Theater

The South Carolina Children Theatre project in Greenville (SCCT) has been supported for years by the BMW Group. It offers children and teenagers from the entire state the opportunity to experience performing arts. The Theatre Outreach Programs (TOPS) enable teenagers in socially disadvantaged schools and areas of South Carolina to rehearse and perform plays. A performance entitled KNOW WAY handles problems that teenagers in this age group are often confronted with: alcohol, drugs and sexual abuse.

A further project of the BMW Group, the Arts Partnership of Spartanburg, offers a highly varied palette of cultural activities. These are held in a theatre and art museum as well as a teaching and science center, all in the same area of the city.

musica viva BMW Composition Prize

The musica viva BMW Composition Prize is an integral part of the musica viva concert series. This series was founded in 1945 by composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann and has been directed by Udo Zimmermann since the 1997-98 season. Within the framework of this project, we help create impulses for the future by commissioning new orchestral works that reflect contemporary intellectual and artistic developments and show the breadth of modern music in all of its facets.

Once each year or two since the 1997-98 season, we have invited entries to the musica viva BMW Composition Prize competition, which young composers throughout the world are eligible to enter. Prizes are awarded to works of various musical genres, which are then premiered by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra with prominent soloists. The prizes, whose monetary value amounts to EUR 25,000 (First Prize: EUR 10,000; Second Prize: EUR 7,500; Third Prize: 5,000; special talent awards: EUR 2,500) are decided on by an independent jury of musicians and musicologists who select the winners from hundreds of entries sent from all over the world.

The Art of the Motorcycle

'The Art of the Motorcycle' is a unique, innovative exhibition concept developed by the Guggenheim Foundation and supported primarily by the BMW Group. The exhibition includes around 125 of the most varied types of motorcycles. The show pays tribute to the motorcycle as an important contribution to design and technology in the 20th century and traces its development from utility object to cult object.

Criteria for acceptance in the exhibition included, on the one hand, fundamental technological developments such as the boxer engine and Cardan drive used in the BMW R 32 in 1923; on the other hand, the exhibition highlights special design concepts such as those used in the German Megola Sport in 1922. Vehicles with historic significance also have their place in the exhibition, such as the Vespa, which made a major contribution toward motorizing the population after World War II. The most famous film motorcycle in the exhibition must be the fully chrome Harley chopper from the movie Easy Rider.

The new Guggenheim Museum at the Venetian Hotel and Resort in Las Vegas had its impressive opening in 2001. The motorcycle show was presented for the first time in New York in 1998, followed by its appearance in the Guggenheim branch in Bilbao. Over one million visitors streamed into these museums to pay homage to the motorcycle as a cultural icon. This exhibit attracted the most visitors of any show ever organized by the Guggenheim Foundation up to now.

BMW Group Designworks

The BMW Group Designworks company was founded by Charles Pelly in 1972. It got its first order from the BMW AG in 1985: development of an integrated seatbelt for the BMW 850i. Now, 70 employees work in the company's locations in Newbury Park, a suburb of Los Angeles, and its representative office in Munich. In 1995, Designworks became a 100% subsidiary of the BMW Group.

2002 saw the completion of its new building extension with a surface area of over 37,500 square feet. The technological highlight of this facility is a model plate with a measurement system. With it, even very large designs, up to the size of large omnibuses, can be modeled and then recorded in three dimensions, via computer. These designs can then be transmitted electronically to the BMW Group Headquarters or other customers.

Versatile - and always a step ahead.
California boasts many design studios of European manufacturers. Designworks' distinguishing feature, however, is its versatility - which transcends branches. In terms of order volume, the BMW Group is the largest - and only - customer from the automobile branch. All other customers come from the most diverse branches of industry. Not only does this encourage creativity, it is also an excellent breeding ground for new ideas - for the BMW Group as well as external customers like Compaq, HP, Nokia, Siemens, Deutsche Bahn, John Deere, Villeroy & Boch and many more.

In addition to automobile design, Designworks concentrates on transportation, product and graphic design, ergonomics and engineering and advanced communication design. It was one of the birthplaces of the new iDrive operating system.
