BMW Invests in SGL Carbon SE

We here at Passport BMW know the benefits of having carbon fiber in a vehicle. Aside from reducing the vehicle's overall weight and fuel consumption, it can also drastically increase its acceleration and performance. Yes, carbon fiber really is a win-win when it's used in vehicles, so it only makes sense that BMW would make heavy use of it in its lineup.
It seems like BMW isn't merely making use of carbon fiber, however. It would be more accurate to say that they're looking to make it too. More specifically, the German automaker recently made a rather large investment in one of the world's largest producers of the material, SGL Carbon SE, and they now own a 15.16-percent share in the company.
By doing this BMW will not only have cheaper access to more carbon fiber for use in their vehicles, but they'll also be able to pass much of that savings onto the consumer by not having to raise the price of vehicles that make more use of the material. Another positive aspect of this investment is actually seen in the U.S. economy too, as the two recently worked in conjunction to construct a new carbon fiber plant in Washington State.
Can't wait to see how BMW will utilize its new carbon fiber resource? Neither can we. We're especially excited to see how it could be used in models like the BMW 750Li xDrive, 335i, and 528i xDrive.
