There are many people out there who would have you believe that performance-driven and eco-friendly technologies just can't exist within the same platform. Even we here at Passport BMW thought this to be true, so it you can imagine our surprise to hear of BMW's refusal to give in to this idea.
Specifically, BMW plans to launch an entirely new subdivision called "i." The BMW i brand will focus on creating eco-friendly vehicles that also live up to the performance-driven nature that embodies all new BMW models. The first example of this new ideology was seen when BMW unveiled a concept model of the BMW pure-electric i3 in Frankfurt, Germany.
And, now comes the part where we break it all down for you. In the upcoming BMW i3, the Bavarian automaker has outdone themselves, introducing a newly-adopted design philosophy, known as "LifeDrive." The "Life," is referring to the vehicle's exterior. The exterior of the BMW i3 is composed of lightweight, yet incredibly strong, carbon fiber. Meanwhile, the "Drive," of the vehicle features a 170-hp electric engine, boasting a driving range of around 93 miles per charge and a maximum torque of 184 lbs.-ft.
It isn't hard to see that BMW has taken the time to ensure that the "Life and "Drive" of the BMW i3 complement each other quite well. What makes this harmony of "Life and "Drive" even more impressive, is the fact that is results in the BMW i3 concept being able to race from 0-37 mph in less than four seconds. Even more impressive is its 0-60 sprint of less than eight seconds.
Those of you who are performance purists should note, however, that the BMW i3 concept is being designed mainly for urban commuters. As such, BMW has devoted less time to focusing on improving the sprint time for it than it has for the i8 concept. It should also be noted that all of these data findings are preliminary, so expect to see some level of improvement in the final production models.
We also realize that many of you will be in the market for a new vehicle between now and when the BMW i3 is finally released. That said, we invite you to browse our selection of new BMW models online by visiting our new inventory or showroom pages respectively.
